About 3 weeks ago I had to put one of my cats down for renal (kidney) failure. She was 17 years old. My other cat was fine and she's 16. She was a little confused at first as to where the other cat had gone but seemed to pop back into a routine within a week. Now she's listless, mewling like a kitten (something not at all her normal behavior) and in general behaving much like my older cat had just prior to her several renal failure. Is it possible that 2 different cats can have the same symptoms of the same problem within such a short period of time? I wouldn't ask if this was an airbourne illness, but renal failure is such a strange thing to happen in 2 cats within a month. Could it be that my cat is just severely depressed? In case you were wondering - she's still drinking and seems to be eating and seems to be using the litter box, though not as much as she was last week.

Maybe she is just lonley. And depressed because of that. She really is confused. Be whit her for hour on day, and then she would not be alone. I hope it will work!

If the vet who saw your other cat checked her for Feline Leukemia Virus (which is highly communicable in cats), and any other diseases that might have ultimately contributed to her renal failure, and didn't find anything else wrong, then it is likely your surviving cat is going through some anxiety and depression due to suddenly being the only cat. You may be able to just call your vet and describe how she's acting, just to put your mind at ease about it. As long as she is eating, drinking and using her box, she will probably be ok with time. You're probably already giving her lots of extra attention and comfort. Just keep doing that and hopefully she will settle back down within a week or two. Good luck and best wishes.

She's probably just lonely. Take her to the vet and get her checked out to be sure, but I think she's missing the other cat and is crying, trying to get the other cat to answer.

Your cat misses her companion. It would be a good idea to have her looked over by a vet however. As much as people say that cats aren't social they really do get close to each other. I have had the sad task of putting one cat down and then finding his longtime companion very upset and walking around the house looking for him. We waited a little while and adopted an adult cat from our vets. After about 2 weeks the other cat started to calm down. The cat we adopted was supremely patient and submissive so she blended herself in. My older cat lived about 2 years after that.

Could be depressed that the other cat is gone. If they happen to be siblings they both could have inherited kidney disease. I would take your cat to the vet and have her checked out.
