...ok - male or female? He's a cool cat - deferred to older spayed cat who passed away this past August 30th (she was 14 and was 5 when I brought Frankie home - he was a couple of months old then).

my husband and i have a nuetered 3 year old,an unfixed 2 year old female and an unfixed 9 month old female. they all absolutly adore eachother.the two older cats have taken the kitten as their own, cleaning and cuddling her all the time. so i would say that it would probably be just fine for your cat. but then again, all cats are different just like people. as in the sex of the kitten, we suggest another male. we have found that males are more laid back than females and the older cat might enjoy a friend, not so much a playmate.

If he's outgoing, or even just neutral to people, a kitten would be good. You want to be careful, though. He might get jealous.
I myself have a 9y/o neutered male. Blacky's survived 10 kittens, the first being Willie. The next, a few years later, were a pair(male and female). Willie didn't like them and stalked them. At that point Blacky developed a feud with Willie and fought to protect them. The same with the next six(the females kittens). You would often see 3-4 kittens piled on top of him or swatting his tail. I only once saw him swatt at one, and not hard. Well, we gave away all 6 kittens, and the pair were stolen, so we got another kitten. He was perfectly nice to her too, and though I can see he is obviously jealous, he'd never do anything to hurt her.
If your cat has a mild, gentlemanly temperment like mine, go for it, either gender. If he swats people and/or other animals, pick a female. If they did ever develop a feud, a male might kill him.

And be careful. Make SURE you have enough time to spend equally between them. Yes, the kitten may be more cuddly-cute, but he needs the love too.
