...rat seen by the vet? She has been making a new sort of noise, it is kind of a low series of sort of muffled squeaks, she seems a little more nervous than usual but... no poryphorin, and other wise she seems fine, energetic and she is eating and drinking fine. And she does not make this sound all the time... it is sort of off and on. Just want to take her in to make sure she is okay, does anyone have a general estimate as to how much it would cost for her to get checked out at the vet?
she is about a year and half old now... so i dont know if it could have anything to do with age?
Please no more annoying answers about feeding my rat to snakes, eating her or other various super annoying things! thanks anyways jerk offs!

and to the others that have answered sincerely, i greatly appreciate it! you rock!

I live in florida, and it costs me $80 to take my boys in. I had a femal who was bleeding vaginally a few years ago, it turned out she had cancer, she had a tumor and they told me she only had about 6mos to live. she died two years later. I did a ton of research on rats when I got her diagnosis, and I found out that the less color a rat has, the more inbreading is in her dna, which causes severe genetic defects. Most elbino rats live max 3 years. Focus on her diet, don't feed her bird food like they tell you to buy at the pet store, mix it with rat blocks, they have more nutrients (which she needs) and also serves as a chew to grind down her teeth (which she also needs), and a good diet can extend the life of any pet. Also, google burxing, this is something rats do for a few reasons. They communicate differently then we're used to. She might just be letting you know she wants attention. One other thing is get her a wheel. Rats can literally go insane from boredom, and getting a wheel will solve that. My female rat only got locked in her cage when I had to go somewhere. Even then, not always. I just closed my bedroom door so she couldn't get out of my room, and made sure anything eddible (ie, makeup, lotion, ky jelly (a big one for her), shampoo) was out of her reach or else she would chew through the bottle and eat it. when it was time for her to go back in her cage, i'd call her like a cat and she would come out, or if i had to, i'd shake her food bag and she came out. Rats are wicked smart, and they pick up on things very quickley. She never had a wheel because she was hardley in her cage. The two boys I have now stay in until I can play with them, but they hve eachother and I now have two dogs, so they can't roam like she did. She's probably just bored, but the hard truth is, even if you did take her to the vet, treatment for anything wrong with rats is unbelievably expensive, and past any treatment, their life span is so short you may only buy a few months. Treat her like she's bored first, if there is something wrong, you'll see more signs soon. In which case, call vets from the ph book and see first if they'll see her, second how much. Look for red discharge around the nose and eyes. That's the first sign anythings wrong with a rodent. PS. IT'S NOT FUNNY TO ANSWER QUESTIONS ABOUT pets IN AN INSENSITIVE MANNER, GO TO A CHAT ROOM IF YOU FEEL THE NEED TO BE A DOUSCH BAG

Call the vet nearest you; most people are kind enough to answer a few questions over the phone including general costs. Good luck.

My vet charges 40 dollars just to walk through the door. It doesn't sound serious but I'm no rat expert, although I was married to one.

Hey there,

Im actually just about to walk out the door to take my mousies to the vet.

At my local vet where i take my dog they say they will charge me $40 for small animals... which your rat falls under. Its very important to make sure it doesnt get sicker or it will cost more! and break your heart if it gets really sick........................

You may find its cheaper where you are... this is in Sydney Australia...

Dont worry about the other people on here with their childish comments.. its your pet and it deserves medical attention!

Good luck!

Edit: Just got back from the vet and they took my Maisy Mouse to heaven... $10 all up..

I took my hamster to the vet when I was about 8. I learned very quickly that vets have no idea what they hell they are talking about with small rodents. He said my hamster was fine and charged my $50 after waiting in the waiting room for an hour and a half. My hamster died the next morning. You'd be better off finding a rat forum online probably and asking about it there.

it could be her age, but I would go to petsmart, or petco, and see the vet on duty. They usually will look at the pet, and not charge you.
