I recently fell in love with a cat at an adoption shelter and I HAD to have it. When I took it to our lake home our 8 months old dog HATED him. The cat minds his own buisness and just roams around but the dog runs up and just keeps howling at the cat and cornering it. Our other dog could care less about the cat and just lays on the couch but this dog will not let cat do anything with him. I know the cat can get along with dogs because it immediatly got along with my parents 5 year old cocker spaniel. Any Suggestions? DO I have to be worried about the cat or dog injuring each other?? the cat gets declawed in 2 weeks, so should I limit their interactions till then?

Give it time. Spend time playing with both the dog and cat simultaneously to show each of them that they won't be overlooked. Do a lot of activities with them to get them in the same room and get them used to each other that have positive rewards (treats, attention, etc). As long as the dog isn't attacking or being violent, it should work out.

Run a wet towel over the dog and then the same with the cat, and then run the towels over each animal. This way you will spread the scent and they will smell each other on their own bodies. This worked well for me. It will also take a few weeks for them to be friends. Make sure if the dog still feels dominance. Lock the cat up for a few hours a day and let the dog see that. This way the dog doesn’t feel threatened, especially because he was there first.
