tailcalled a fole(not sure of spelling)? I believe they live outside but do come into the house sometimes. I do know that is what they are called but am not sure on the spelling. It looked like a mouse about 3-5 inches plus a furry tail about 4in.

You may be looking for a vole. I just type vole into the search bar and hit enter and there are generally plenty of sights to choose from,

Voles are rodents that are halfway between a mole and a mouse. They do not have long tails. A vole is sort of blind, the eyes are recessed and non functioning. The non-fuzzy tail is approx 1/2 inch long. A vole makes a path, or run, that is sunk into the turf, with grass covering the top. It doesn't tunnel, or make mounds.Perhaps you saw a chipmunk or ground squirrel?

Sounds like you are looking at a "vole". A Yahoo search for "vole identification" (include the quotation marks in the search box) yields 69 results. If you do the same search, and are willing to spend a little time exploring, I'm sure that you will quickly find the information you seek. Several websites on the first page of results offer pictures of voles.

Good luck with your search.

I think you mean a mole or vole.
There is picture on the link

Moles are members of the family (Talpidae) of mammals in the order Insectivora that live underground, burrowing holes. Some species are aquatic or semi-aquatic. They have cylindrical bodies covered in fur with small or covered eyes; the ears are generally not visible. They feed on small invertebrate animals living under ground. Moles can be found in North America, Europe and Asia.

The family is divided into three subfamilies:

Desmaninae (desmans)
Talpinae (moles)
Uropsilinae (shrew moles)
Male moles are called boars, females are called sows. A group of moles is called a labour.

Most vole species have rootless molars that fold into a series of triangles. Voles are one of the few rodents whose molars continue to grow during their entire life. There is little to distinguish a vole from a lemming.

All rodents have incisors that grow continuously.

Adult voles, depending on the species, are three to seven inches long.

I think you're talking about a vole. They do live outside, they are often the primary diet of owls.
