I too love reptiles. I agree with the people who promote education as a good starting point. Just be careful where you get that education. Some of the shows on television focus on the agressive behaviors of reptiles without offering any explanation as to why the animal is behaving that way. Check to see if your community has a local Herpetological Society. They are in to public education and awareness since many of us who own reptiles are judged by the few irresponsible ones who make the news after some preventable disaster has occured.

In our house we have two lizards and a whole basement full of snakes that we breed as a hobby. We also have a cat. When people ask me if I have been bitten I respond with, "Yes, a few times, but I have been bitten (and scratched) more often by the one cat in the house than all the reptiles combined." They are amazed since they view cats as soft lovable creatures but do not have that high an opinion of my scaly friends. Yes, my cat is warm and fuzzy and I love her dearly but my snakes and lizards are cold and cuddly.

If you can get your hands on some books at the library or the pet store written by Bill and Kathy Love. They are breeders of mostly corn snakes and they are very factual but also include some awsome pictures. I will include the address to her website with this post.

You should keep thinking that they aren't dangerous. Some snakes might bite you if they feel threatened, but they are peaceful most of the time
