My older son whom is 19 breeds geckos however my 7 yr old wants to get into lizards also. He now has 2 bearded dragon babies and did have 2 geckos but well it was a lot for him to handle so we kept the babies and my older sons friend took the geckos (my younger sons 2) the problem is now my little one is very upset over this, it has been about a week but he started to cry lastnight Should I get him new ones or explain to him that once he gets older and understands better he may have more. I know I am the only one that knows my son and knows how he is but it is good to hear from others. Thanks

Lizards are tough for kids, so are a lot of other pets. Let him stew for a while, then when he is calm and more rational, discuss the possibility of an easier pet, like fish.

If you buy him new ones he wont ever get the prinicipal of responsibility. Tell him when he is old enough to handle all of the lizards he can have more.

I think at his age a reptile is too much to handle with out a lot of parental involvement. You said he now has two baby Beardy's....I would help him maintain thier enviorment. When he has mastered this then I see no reason in expanding his reptile collection.

I would let him keep only one, and tell him if he slacks off caring for it, that that's it. No more pets until he is older. And if he takes good care of it for a whole year, he can have another. This will encourage him to take responsibility and teach him that responsibility is an earned privilage. I loved reptiles as a kid, and I would keep wild ones off and on for a few weeks and let them go. My dad thought it was weird that I had pet slugs from the garden when I was 10, so he bought me a 3' corn snake. Then they allowed me to breed 3 pairs of mice to feed the snake, and of course, I had lots of pet mice too. I was only 11 with a snake terrarium, 5 cages of mice, a cat and a dog to take care of. I managed to do well, and loved evey minute of it. I obiously had no friends, either. Over the years I have owned or cared for almost any reptile common in the pet trade. I think it is a healthy interest, and I would encourage it.
