| You can take humans and other larger mammals and put them is small cages but they wont as unvaryingly run in wheels or on treadmills. So I guess I'm asking why do they do it and not larger animals. |

| I've seen a coati (a brown raccoon-like mammal) run on a wheel. I think that they just need to exercise their legs. After all, in the wild, mice don't usually walk when they are above ground. They are constantly running so as to avoid being someone else's dinner. They are built for speed, not for lounging. |
