| Mitral regurgitation is quantified by Echocardiogram as being: 0, trace, 1+, 2+, 3+, and 4+. Patients with 0 to 1+ almost never need surgery for regurgitation alone. Patients with 2+ requires alot of thought for risks and benefits. Patients with 3+ to 4+ will need surgery depending on many factors: symptoms, risk of surgery and others too numerous to mention. With experienced surgeons, the success rate for repair is probably >95% for 1 year. In mitral valve replacement, the success rate is probably >99%. Mitral valve repair is more of an "art" than replacement. The 30 day operative mortality is the number you're looking for, it is about 2 to 5% for all comers for both mitral valve repair and replacement. |
