I have had oral surgery, but not this particular kind. I have had wisdom teeth extracted and it was not terribly painful--then again, they weren't impacted.

In my opinion, your post-op condition can have a lot to do with the oral surgeon involved. The guy who did mine really made sure I was well cared-for in post-op. He had me come in anytime I felt uncomfortable and they put in new pads or whatever. I was concerned about not getting too much potentially addicting medication, and they made sure I got what I needed without getting hooked. I think that gave me a lot of confidence that I didn't have to just struggle with the discomfort.

I had it done at the age of 15 in 1996. I remember my jaw feeling very different, my teeth lining up different, my mouth wired shut, drinking through a straw, etc. Not much pain, just a lot of bruise-like pain in my neck. More pain in my neck than the jaw. A lot of swelling! Stiffness for a couple months after my surgury.
