for stitching together panoramic shots.

have been using the one i got from canon with my camera, but it does a poor job at matching brightness between photos and also does not let me choose the stitching points to minimize pain.

anything better out there? anything that's free?
how feasible is it to do this with photoshop when geometry adjustments are needed?

Canon Utilities PhotoStitch.
I've used it for the past 4 years... and I must tell you it's very good in terms of usability and final product quality.

Check out PTGui. I've used it for a couple of years. It's lacking a little in ease of use but is pretty sophisticated. And it handles 16-bit TIFF images pretty well (if that's important to you.)

If you are having problems with brightness matching on stitches, I would switch into manual mode for both exposure and white balance, and use the same exposure and white balance settings for all images.
