Every time I saute something on the stove top, I do it with a little bit of olive oil. However, the oil will invariably start to crackle and pop, and little bits of it will hit my arms. I tried turning down the heat, but that doesn't really work. Is there a trick to get the oil not to sputter, or another product entirely that is better for sauteing on the stove top? I apologize if this seems like a very basic question, but I'm a bit of a dunce at cooking. :-)

Turning the heat down helps. Also if adding a cold supstance to the pan,try putting it in before the oil is hot to prevent sizzle. Of course you want the meat to sizzle.Try using a George Foreman grill. You won't need any oil and it browns/cooks on both sides at once. These work nice. They come in different sizes for different families.

Put half olive oil and half butter. It will stop the spattering. Also...you can purchase a spatter shield (about $10) to put over your saute pan when cooking. I have one and use it all the time to save my arms and stove top from spattering oil.
