| It is just convention. A b and c are used to denote unknown constants x y and z unknown variables, f g h usually are used for functions. Greek letters are used to denote known constants ie ?. So when we say f(x)=a*g(y)+b*h(z) everybody can understand what is what. |

| I think because we use a, b and c in numbering some questions. It lessens confusion. And I guess because x, y and z are faster to write... |
