some people are "book smart" which is smart in school. most of the time what people have in brains for school, they lack in common sense. i think that is why your math whiz classmates are dumb when it comes to real life.

If the person truly is good at math and the individual views social skills as an asset worth learning, he/she may not be ignorant in that avenue for long. If you're a true mathematician, then you're usually able to reason through complex problems logically and this includes life.

However, these abilities sometimes aren't used until your late teens or early twenties. Furthermore, mathematicians may never learn them simply because they don't view them as important (relative to math), they don't have enough interactions with people, they have never tried to apply their skills to life, or they don't have the awareness to do so.

It is just that way. There is a logic and formalism that resonates really well with some mathematical people but some of these same mathematical people can be really blind to social or human questions.

I wish I knew the answer as to why or how to help these people with this problem. I encounter it daily. But, it is often true. They think I'm illogical and rely on intuition and annecdote way too much and I think that if they got their hands dirty and look at the human aspects of things, they'd have much greater understanding of the way the world works.

All I know is I'm the guy always finding the flaws in their logic. Then again, I have my social blind spots too. C'est la vie.

People have a variety of skills and talents, but they can't have it all. Some of the smartest people around have very little common sense or life sense.

There is a difference between "book smarts" and "street smarts"... a lot of "smart" ppl are "dumb" in life situations..
