...desgnate such numbers.? Why Z?
I know that R = Rational numbers
What is the relation between Z and the numbers it represents?

Yes, the set of integers is designated by capital (and bold) Z. The word for integers in German begins with the letter Z and was first used by the German mathematician, Gauss.

Little z, usally represents a number in the form:

z = a + bi, where i=Sqrt[-1] and a and b are real numbers. These numbers are Complex Numbers.

Don't forget, in 3D plotting, Z is the third dimension after X and Y

As milkyway says, R is actually the real numbers, and Q is the rational numbers.

The german word 'Zahlen' also, more importantly, means 'numbers.' Slightly more relevant than the verb 'to figure.' :-)

Z = set of all integers.

R = set of all rationls

C = set of all complex numbers

N = set of all natural numbers (positive integers)
