reference to "mariage"? REPLACE IN WITH CIVIL UNIONS. And leave marriage to the churchs therby seperating church and state by not haveing our goverment give any extra consideration or tax breaks for a strictly Religas ceremony.
The question was replaceing all references to Marriage with Civil unions that way the reigious people can preserve the so called "santiny of marriage" without the state geting involved.I feel any reference to a religious ceremony and any favortism toward marriages should me declared unconstitunal, Now put that in your pipe and smoke it, and give me a real response.

what laws would you have to rewrite? that you have to have a marrage license to be married. what else is there?

Marriage does not necessarily have to be a religious ceremony. Many couples who decide to become married are atheist or agnostic. Some rituals, such as having someone from your church lead the wedding, can be religious but those are very optional. Even traditions like placing the wedding ring on the left ring finger have nothing to do with religion. In fact, the ring finger back in ancient days (in Greece) it was believed to have a vein that ran straight to the heart which was why that tradition began.

If you decided to cut marriage out of the state and simply made it a religious tradition then how would you work money and such? If your partner was dying who would decide if heroics would be used or not? Our government tends to be slower in making change and changing marriage into a religious tradition would be nearly impossible as I see it.

I believe that marriage is fine the way it is (for the most part); although some, like Britney Spears, mock the meaning of a wedding by having day long marriages. So why change the meaning of marriage into something other than what it is (marriage is about love, not religion).
