If the bus takes a sudden stop, will the ball still keep the same path down or will it go forward? Will you still be able to catch the ball..assuming you do not move position? What if it was a piece of foam / sponge....will the force of the sudden stop push the foam/sponge forward towards the front of the bus? Is there any mathematical formulae that explains this phenomena?

It will keep going forward while keeping the same path. Relative to you and the bus, it'll look like it moved forward suddenly, but it has been moving forward with the bus.

it'll go forward and down because ,as stated above, it was moving with the bus, but it will also go down because of gravity
