I never made one but I would try a novel(?) approach. Perhaps you know that small propeller model planes are built where the propeller shaft is connected to a rubber band connected to the tail inside. The propeller is wound up backwards and when released drives the propeller correctly to move the plane forward. It may be possible to connect a rubber band to the rear axle of a model car inside at one end of the axle and on the opposite side to the car frame. Winding the wheels and axle (that must be glued to turn together) backwards should propel the car when released. Even better, attach the rubber band to the middle of the axle and to both sides at the frame to prevent side load. The distance traveled will depend on the length of rubber band being wound and the number of turns of winding and the traction of the wheels. An improvement would be to coast after the band unwinds. This could be accomplished by attaching the rubber band to the axle using a hook that holds the band only while being wound up backwards and until unwound. Good luck.
