| I just wanted to add to Marianne's explanation that mathema also meant knowledge more generally and mathematics specifically in Greek. Mathematikos also meant mathematical. Also, all of these Greek words originally came from the verb manthanein, to learn. |

| The word "mathematics" comes from the Greek ?????? (máthema) which means "science, knowledge, or learning"; ??????????? (mathematikós) means "fond of learning". Today, the term refers to a specific body of knowledge - the rigorous, deductive study of quantity, structure, space, and change. |
