Without a title and a hand written bill of sale. He told me that someone stole the title from his car when it was broken in to. I didnt have a reason not to believe him. But now im not so sure. I went to register the car and was told that the seller(the legal owner) needs to order the title and give a copy of his id so the bill of sale can be notarized. Well i keep calling him and he's avoiding me. He wont answer my calls at all. This is the first car ive ever bought. What can I do? is there a way to get around him? I dont know what to do about this situation.

You are going to have to call the police or an attorney on this one. I would start with the police because the guy who sold it to you, may have in fact, stolen it from someone else.

take it to the next step and call the police.. you might need to hire a lawyer...
if you can talk to him, or leave him a message, let him know that you will pay for getting the title (a copy is 13$ in tennessee) all he has to do is go to the place you get your tags, and they will print it off right there and it can be signed over..

Yes.

You can send him a "Legal Constructive Notice and Demand". Be sure you include a clause that says that he has 30 days to respond.

Word it as an affidavit stating precisely what you want to happen.

If he doesn't respond within the 30 days, send a default. The notice must be sent certified / return receipt. The default can be sent certificate of mailing only (it's cheaper).

Once he defaults and your default letter is sent, the terms of your affidavit become truth in law, fact and commerce.

You can then take your Legal Constructive Notice and Demand and the default to the DMV showing that you made a good-faith effort to resolve your differences. With no response forthcoming, his interest in the car will cease to exist.
