Depends on the market and what people are looking for... The big trend nowadays seems to be making mobile phones like an alternative to laptops (though they are nowhere near replacing laptops any time soon). All a phone really needs are the basic functions of a phone. Anything more than that is just extras, but it seems that you really don't have much of a choice lately with all these phones with fancy options. I suppose some extras are nice, as long as you dont empty your wallet because of it.

Here's my experience:

- Most people don't use a cell phone camera much.
- MP3 on your phone is like a poor-man's iPod - though some of the new ones are looking good (Rokr and Walkman W600)
- Email is great if you are a business person or love to be in touch (Blackberry and Treo 650 are the best)
- Web Browsing is good - but get a decent screen and a good browser (T-Mobile Sidekick, Treo 650, or Blackberry)

Voice is usually the most important feature!

That is all dependant on your needs and requirements. Usage of a camera could be very handy to help commuincate something or share an experience. MP3 player functionality often times adds the ability to play better ringers that may be more distinguishable. wifi or bluetooth functionality helps with communicating with a computer, handheld, handsfree or some other peripherls.

I could go on, but the real question that must be first answered is what do you need a cell phone to do? And also, what are your communication needs? These questions are important. Cell phones are as personal as shoes. Some people buy from payless for something that is functional and does what it needs to do. Some people go to footlocker and buy the latest $150 dollar shoe because the like the way it looks. Some people Buy a $150 shoe because its required by work. . . .
