Increasingly, commentators question the viability of the United Nations. They suggest it has (and indeed I guess it has) been deliberately sidelined on several occasions, has had multiple corruption scandals, and still seems beset with inaction and inability to make resolutions.

I would really like to hear opinions on its future, if it has any.

Without significant reform it is unlikely to continue with a meaningful existance, but I think most western nations will force this to happen before allowing it to completely dissolve.

At the end of the day it is a forum to get the nations of the world around a single table. Naturally, it is not possible to drive clear consensus in such situations. So it is difficult to criticize it because of inaction or slowness. I doubt there is a silver bullet to that particular problem.

To think the UN can resolve major issues facing the world today is niaive. At the end of the day that will fall on the shoulders of the larger nations. What it cannot do is get in the way. It must ensure dialogue is flowing and that diplomatic solutions are pursued to global issues. However once these grind to a halt or fail, it must excuse itself from the proceedings.

They have never been a viable agency. If the US didn't push the UN into Korea when the USSR was protesting something as was absent, the UN wouldn't have gotten involved. The UN hasn't done anything viable to protect the people of Africa from genocide. In Samalia the US had to provide logistical aid to feed the people.

They refuse to condemn Hamas's suicide bombers from killing innocent people, but condemn Israel for showing restraint and only going after the leadership, tells me that the whole organization is a farce.

So no they will not be viable in the future
