...("God is dead...")? In Elton John's song "Levon", there's the following lyric:

"He was born a pauper to a pawn on a Christmas Day,
when the New York Times said 'God is dead, and the war's begun…'"

Does anyone know if there's a specific reference in the NYT to this? I suspect it has to do with World War I, but I'm not sure.
