as a backup? I want to have an automatic backup, once a day to a external HD. I have 5 different folders where the crucial data is in. What software is the best and what software is cheap (free) and good?

I'd second the suggestion of SyncToy as mentioned above. Check the help file to see how to schedule it. Pretty straight-forward. If you have XP Pro (as opposed to XP Home) you also have "Backup" as an option. Start - All Programs - Accessories - System Tools - Backup. If you're comfortable with the command line, Robocopy (free) from Microsoft is VERY slick, but aimed at the admin types. You can find in MS's Server Resource kits (http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=9d467a69-57ff-4ae7-96ee-b18c4790cffd&displaylang=en)

I have been using SyncBack since long, may be a year. It's a very good software. http://www.2brightsparks.com/downloads.html
