I know it's really easy to do on a Mac, and I'm wondering if there is an equivalent software on Windows that I can use to edit home videos.

If you are using Windows and are a novice, I would suggest using Windows Movie Maker, which should have been included with Windows XP. It is free, so you do not have to make a commitment to purchase any software, especially if you are like me and will lose interest quickly. If would suggest that when you become more knowledgable of video editing and find that Movie Maker is lacking in features you crave, then you should spend the money on commercial software.

I don't know if it's "the best" but it's definitely easy to use and offers more than just the basics. It's Windows Movie Maker which comes with Windows XP. Allows you to import clips, including importing footage from a camcorder etc. There's a wide variety of output options in terms of quality, and actually editing and mixing your video is easy. Dozens of transitions, fades, brightness filters, effects, volume adjustments etc. and you can add in music of your own as well. I use it all the time to edit my digital camera movie clips as well as ones I take with my Sony Handycam.

P.S. - The latest update (2.1) offers DVD burning capabilities - http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/updates/moviemaker2.mspx
