Without a title and a hand written bill of sale. He told me that someone stole the title from his car when it was broken in to. I didnt have a reason not to believe him. But now im not so sure. I went to register the car and was told that the seller(the legal owner) needs to order the title and give a copy of his id so the bill of sale can be notarized. Well i keep calling him and he's avoiding me. He wont answer my calls at all. This is the first car ive ever bought. What can I do? is there a way to get around him? I dont know what to do about this situation.
what good does a mechanics lean do?

I would get an attorney's assistance on this. If the guy sold you a stolen car, then when the VIN number is researched and legal owner is contacted you will be out of both your money and car. You need to go to an attorney and or the police and get this guy in court. If you have this guys contact info then get it to the authorities now before he leaves town. Once this fella is gone, you are stuck with a car you can't drive and if it does come up stolen...you could be liable for it...even though you were a victim you would be treated as an accessory.

What you did was extremely foolish. You bought a car from someone who did not legally own it. Nobody drives around with the title in the car. If he were the actual owner, all he would have needed to do was go to the DMV and submit an "affidavit of lost title" so you could have the vehicle legally transferred to you. He probably still owes the bank for it. You need to contact the DMV and find out the who legal owner is and proceed from there. ADDED....don't take the illegal advice of the one who said to get a mechanic lien. You have no grounds to do that and it would only complicate your situation.

You can apply for a lost title and find the original owner. You can get the last registered owners name by doing a Vin search. Once you find the owner you can then have them sign it over. Get help so you don't get screwed again.

Another option....if you know someone is to put a mechanics lean on it. This occurs when someone leaves a car at a shop and does not pick it up or pay for it.
