Voltaire attacked religious Fanaticism in his philosophical dictionary. He was against terrorism based on religion. He warned people that it is dangerous. This is why he was against The Divine Right of King. (Packet on Democracy, p.19) Today, we still have this problem, and we can read his writing to know what to do. In many democracies, the government is separate from the church. what mean is last sentence mean??

In America, the "separation of church and state" is a concept expressed in the First Amendment to the Constitution: "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof..." At the most basic level, this means that our government cannot make any law requiring you to belong to a given religion, nor prohibit you from exercising your religious beliefs. In Europe at the time, people were required to be of a certain religion; to profess another religion could be a death sentence.

the church is not supposed to have any influence whatsoever on the law making process. we only have to look at George W to see how that's being ignored today

Many of the Europeans ,fleeing religious persecution ,settled in the northern eastern part of the U.S. Being aware of this ,the founding fathers wanted to avoid mistakes made in Europe where religious persecution had killed thousands of people over the years..when Protestants killed Catholics, Christians killed Muslims, then Power would change and Catholics would kill Protestants, in England so-called Christians would kill Jews. The founding fathers of the USA believed human interpretation of what God wanted should not be in government, especially in populations of diverse groups. Representative democracies count on their citizens to indivdually conduct themselves with socially acceptable decency.
