| I know that HMO's came about in the 1970's due an act of Congress which subsidized them (in response to rampant inflation), but what was health insurance like before? |

| HMO's require you to pick from a limited number of "in network doctors" as well as referrals to specialists. You cannot go directly to the specialists. HMO's are a pain in the A** an d on their way out! |
