to do? Bank accounts/mortgages/bi We live in New York City. What are the processes of taking care of the bank accounts, moneys and all? We have some joint accounts with my dad. Some between dad and mom who is still alive. Then there is the house. We don't want to lose the house.

What are the processes? What I really don't like is there is no time to grief. There is so much to do.

You need to see an attorney to help you figure out what needs to go through probate and what does not. Probate taxes will be calculated depending on the state you live in and the way the ownership of the assets are structured. If she does not have an attorney, use one you know or get a recommendation for a trusted friend.

You can also ask the attorney to help you set things up with your mom to minimize these taxes upon her death (even if she is expected to live on for a long time). Estate planning is best done long before it is needed.
