I fell onto my outstretched hand and was told by hospital ER to follow up with an orthopedic doctor. At my ortho appointment, the doctor took an x-ray and both her and a resident doctor confirmed I fractured my scaphoid bone. She told me I had to be put into a cast for 4 weeks and then she would follow-up 4 weeks later with another x-ray to check healing. At that next appoitment she said the crack in the bone was still visible but that I should try a split and start physical therapy. I decided to see another ortho doctor for a second opinion, and this one sent me for a ct scan. Today at my follow-up appt. he told me he didn't see the fracture in any of my previous x-rays (from the other doctor) and the ct scan was normal. Does anyone have experience reading x-rays that can help, I want another opinion from an expert who can read them. Both of these doctors are supposedly the best in my area and I cannot understand how 2 doctors see a fracture and 1 doesn't from the same images.

I was injured quite severely a few years ago and I have learned not to trust doctors statements much. I always want them to show me the radiology, lab reports and any xrays or scans. I can tell you that a fracture is actually more likely to show at 4 weeks because as the bone heals around the fracture it thickens and outlines it. I would also ask you the think about how your arm feels. Sometimes that is the best indicator. I have seen more than one doctor tell somebody they were fine when they were not. I have seen very few doctors tell a healthy person that they were sick.

When I spent a week in the hospital for a dog bite to my hand.....my Healthnet HMO in California assigned a Dr. of sports medicine. I was 45 years old. When I tore my rotater cuff.......I was sent to a Dr. of sports medicine.........This was in Florida, I had Blue Cross Blue Shield Insurance. I did physical therapy and they wanted to do surgery but because of the hurricanes and loosing my insurance when I left the state I didn't have it done! I was 50 years old. Ask around gyms and people who play sports to get their opinion on a Doctor who specializes in sports medicine. Hope you heal soon!

Be on the safe side and take the one who saw the fracture. My grandson had a similar problem happen same way doctor said nothing to worry about. No fracture. Two years later it is found and never healed correctly gives him pain alot of days he's only 17,and they can not fix it now without extensive surgery's which insurance will not pay for.One more thing to deal with.Cheers!
