...It is driving me nuts on my Toshiba!? Every minute or so on my Toshiba Satellite laptop, the hard disk light flickers and this is followed by a 2 or 3 second whooshing sound of the fan coming on and off. It seems to happen even when there is no activity, and it is VERY annoying. I'd like like to purchase a new laptop that does not have this feature. Any suggestions?

Laptops are small tightly packed units that generate heat. If you run on batteries the fan goes on and off to save power. You will always have a fan noise but, if you are running on AC power you can turn the fan on all the time. I know this doesn't help but you will get use to it. If you stop the fan it will alarm out the system and you will also over heat. Note. If there is a quiet non fan system out there it will cost you a bundle.

For what it's worth, my iBook and PowerBooks have never done this.
