| I am a computer engineer who has been in the business for 10+ years. First, you need to decide which track you want to follow: Technical or management. IF you are interested in remaining highly technical with some higher degree of responsability, then stay technical. Otherwise, if you would like to make more money, but not be as technical, then go with management. The Technical track usually goes like this: Junior Engineer, Senior Engineer, Principal Enginee and Consulting Engineer. The management path: Senior or Principal engineer to project lead, group lead/supervisor, manager, director, VP, Exec VP. Every company is different and every person is different, but on average it takes 3-5 years between positions. Unless you are a highly motivated individual and you really know what you want, then it could move faster. |
