Usually when people show up early, I say "I'm glad you're here. Here, set the table" and I hand them the dishes! Most of the tiime people are understanding and most offer to help anyway.

It depends on how early. Are we talking just about 15 minutes? Or so early that maybe the host/hostess hasn't even had time to get dressed? I think if the person who invited you has to say something like, "Take a seat, I'll be down as soon as I get dressed." then they have to run aroundm hurrying to get finished, then it was way too early.

It is rude to show up early. One should show up 5 to 7 minutes late. When guests arrive early, politely ignore them: "You of course won't mind while I finish with preparing for dinner." Go about your necessary business while the guests sit, waiting. Guests should never be pressed into service, before or after dinner.

I think it is rude, if it annoys the host(s). Some people really don't want to be caught in the middle of the preparations for a dinner, so stay away! But some people will be surprised at happy to see the visitors earlier. Konklusion: Depends on who invites....
