At a buffet, ten percent of the bill is customary. But as with tipping in general, stick to the formula only if the waiter is attentive, appearing promptly when you need him. If he provides extra-good service, then you could tip him more. But if he neglects to refill your water glass or is missing in action when you're ready for the check, feel free to give less

I don't know where I heard this, but I heard that at a buffet, tipping $1-$2 per person is adequate, depending on the kind of restaurant and if you have to get your own drinks or not.

Not much since you're serving yourself.

People seem to think that because its a buffet and you serve yourself that you don't have to tip. You need to take into account your service assistants, they clear all the plates out of your tables after you're finished, you will be surprised at how much people eat and how fast the plates stack up, which get in the way when your trying to have your meal. At some buffets the service assistants also bring your drinks. They clean the mess left behind, spills, the floors and even clean up vomit from over-eaters. They will bring you things if you ask for them (napkins or forks/spoons if you forgot)
Remember, they are also living off their tips! They are paid minimum wage! Also, they are busy and working hard, depending on the size of the restaurant, some girls have over 10 tables that they are taking care of at the same time.
$2.00 a person is ideal, even $3.00 for a party of two.
They greatly appreciate the tips they receive!!
