I am new to my position as head of shipping. It is up to my discretion whether to use a new frieght carrier or not. I am going to call their sales rep to come in and discuss their services and procedures with us, and I'm wondering if it is in bad taste to ask them to bring us lunch. If we go with them, we will be shipping ALOT of frieght.

I would call to introduce yourself, tell him your new position, and then present that you would be interested in getting together for lunch with the group. I guarantee that he will be the one wanting to pay, because he makes a huge commission if you go with his company, and also he has an expense acct so it's not coming out of his pocket.

Not at all. Also, make them dance for you. Seriously, though, I think it could go either way. I'd say that you should err on the side of caution and forego the request to be fed. But wait, I might be wrong. Let's see what the others have to say.

Unethical! Totally in bad taste! Let them OFFER the goodies, NEVER ask!
