...software to fix this? What is the BEST? I've tried all the popular FREE spyware software -- Yahoo! Anti-Spy, Ad Aware, Microsoft Windows Defender, and more. None of these are getting rid of the spyware and adware that has taken over my computer -- launching pop-ups, slowing (or stopping completely) peformance, and who knows what other damaging activities. Please advise on which spyware / adware REMOVAL and proactive security software tool is rated the BEST... and worthy of my payment (i.e. $20 -$40). I am a relative power PC user, but I have never been hit this hard by spyware / adware and now need to turn to the Yahoo! community for help. Thank you very much in advance for your help!

To keep this clean in the future, I would suggest the following things:
1.Install Spywareblaster (is freeware) from http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html
SpywareBlaster doesn`t scan and clean for so-called spyware, but prevents it from being installed in the first place. It blocks the popular spyware ActiveX controls, and also prevents the installation of any of them via a webpage.

* Avoid illegal sites, because that's where most malware is present.
* Don't click on links inside popups.
* Don't click on links in spam messages claiming to offer anti-spyware software; because most of these so called removers ARE spyware.
* Download free software only from sites you know and trust. Because a lot of free software can bundle other software, including spyware.
* Let your antispywarescanner(s) scan frequently and don't forget to update before.
*I do suggest you perform an online virusscan once in a while. (Housecall and/or Bitdefender). Because what one virusscanner can't find another one maybe can.
Also make sure that your virusscanner, the one that is installed on your system is always up to date!
2. Make sure your windows has the latest updates: http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/...
3.Also visit this Free Online Scanner for PC Health and Safety and Microsoft Security At Home for tips to Protect your Pc, Protect yourself and Protect your Family.

I would use PC Tools Spyware Doctor or Webroot Spysweeper. Webroot is top rated and you can buy it in most computer stores. PC Tools can be bought easily online and is what I use.

Both have high rates of detection, although I feel that Spysweeper is a little easier to use for beginners. I've been personally running Spyware Doctor for over a year and have been spyware free all that time.

I've had good luck with Spybot Search and Destroy. It's free.
