If your system dies from a virus, you can reset it yourself using the CD or DVD that came with your comptuer when it was new. Just check your manual or packing material to find out how BEFORE your computer dies, just in case. Its really easy and free once you've had to do it once.

Worst case- your system crashes and you are left with a ten pound skeleton of a main frame, you go down to Best Buy, they fix it, they install it and they charge you around 200 bucks

The worst case virus I think was CIH/Chernobyl. This could destroy the BIOS on some machines, which means you couldn't even format and reinstall.
