My wife and I travel a lot and have discussed this question a few times.
We've concluded that the type of car you buy does say something about you. It ranges from "its what I can afford and it was the best deal I could get" to "I am very important or I am wealthy and want you to know it".
Both are valid. The first from a practical person, the second from someone who needs/wants to shape how or what others think of them.
From our watching, it appears that the dress of the person in the vehicle often matches the vehicle. The guy driving the old pick-up is wearing a shirt with a hole in it. The gal driving the black cadilac with gold trim is older, has a blonde perm and gold jewlry, and glances at you as she passes to see if you are looking at her.

The person driving the sports car or the red car is usually one of the fastest on the road. The one driving the diesel pickup, chosen for trailer towing and fuel economy (me) is usually one of the slower verhicles on the Interstate.
I think we all come pretty close to fitting the vehicle we drive. Some are chosen for economic or practical reasons by either practical people or people who can only afford such a vehicle.
Or, we choose a car that reflects who we are or who we wish we were.
I know a couple (us) who went out and bought a new Firebird (black with t-tops) when they reached 40 years old. I have many friends who made similar purchases at around that same age. Not admitting we were getting older, or wishing we were not 40, or not wanting others to think we were getting old??
Well, I think you're right. Our cars reflect something about us. Not always clear exactly what, but if you watch who's driving what, you do see a lot of similarities.

Hopefully what my car says about me is that I'm concerned about making the least possible environmental impact. I have little to add what the other poster said, but I will say it's not a good idea to sterotype anyone without knowing that person. There are often other factors in play that you don't know about. I am going to vote for the first response as the best, just posting to force a vote so he can get credit.
