| I just got a really cheap used bike today. I'm only going to use it around campus, so I won't be riding with actual traffic or anything. It has a couple rusty patches, which I don't mind too much, but I'm not sure if rust would make it dangerous to ride. And since I live in a dorm, the bike will be outside all the time. Is rust bad for anything besides how the bike looks? How can I stop it from getting more rusty? I don't have much money for buying fancy products, and it's not that big of a deal since I hardly spent any money on it. I read something somewhere about putting oil or vaseline on it to repel water. Does that work? I already have some baby oil and vaseline. Would you recommend trying either of those? Haha, or do all you pro's think I'm crazy? |

| If it's surface rust you can take care of it cheaply. Putting a thick oil or grease (yes vaseline and baby oil would due) on the rust until you could sand the rust spots then primer and paint it would work. Just make sure it stays greased after any snow or rain. It it doesn't really matter how it looks, Rustoleum or similar paint/primers would stop the rust and keep your clothes cleaner than grease in the long run. |
