IMHO, it is neither a good nor reliable vehicle.

good yes. excellent. no. it is quite old and i would only get this car if i needed it cheaply. reliable, yes but not the same way toyotas or hondas are. mostly they are good off road. if you need excellent and very reliable go for a toyota or honda.

Hi B,

As a previous service manager of a Mitsubishi dealership I have extensive knowledge about the Montero Sport.

I drove many of these vehicles as a company car and I always found them to be reliable and fun to drive.

It doesn't ride as smooth as some suv's, it has more of Truck Ride so to speak, although not as rough as toyota 4 runner.

But as with any used vehicle, the past owners care is critical. If the vehicle wasn't properly maintained then it's suspect to have future problems.

One crtical aspect is to make sure you check for engine smoke from the tail pipe area, both cold and hot. I've seen a few higher mileage vehicles that used oil and smoked.

Another issue I do recall is that after market wheels do not seem to "fit" very well, almost every one I ran across had issues with the front end shaking. Make sure it has the original factory wheels.

The Monetero Sport maintenance schedule is a little more extensive than some other models.

For example, the transmission fluid and cooling system is scheduled to be serviced every 30,000 miles. The "Timing Belt" is scheduled to be changed at 60,000 miles. It is extremely critical that this belt be changed as well.

I would make sure and ask for any and all maintenance records before buying, not just the Montero, but with any vehicle.
