How about a Mazda Protege? A used Honda Civic or Toyota Corolla would also be low maintenance and have good gas mileage.

My brother (his hobby is re-building cars) always said to go with the japanese cars. Honda, Mazda, Toyota....and also, before you buy a used car ask the owner if he/she wouldnt mind taking it to the mechanics to see if anything major is wrong with it. If he/she doesnt want to, you'll know why. Who wants a lemon anyway.........Aloha

You could go with the mainstream Honda and Toyota etc. Once you realize you can't touch these Japanese cars, even with insanely high mileage, you may want to look at the Ford Focus, Dodge Neon, Pontiac Sunfire, Chevrolet Cavalier, or Saturn. You may also find you can get a lot more car for the same money. How about a sporty V6 Mustang? Can you drive a 5 speed? That alone would save you five to ten percent on your fuel bill, even more on long highway trips.
